My Simple Secret to Keeping Messy Coffee Grounds Off My Counter Is Just $4

When I first got into coffee, I quickly got a coffee grinder so I could conveniently grind my beans every morning to ensure freshness. It has been great, but there has been one problem: My counter is covered in coffee grounds.

For over two years, I lived in shame. My partner blamed it all on me (the person who ground the beans every morning), and I was very close to buying a new grinder. But this weekend, I realized the grinder and I were innocent victims of static electricity. And not only that, but there was a really, really simple solution. I purchased this $4 spray bottle from Amazon and ever since, my counter and the grinder itself have been spotless.

It’s like a magic trick. I just fill this little bottle up with water, then measure my beans. Before I add them to the grinder, I give them one spritz, shake them a bit, and then toss them in. There’s no more coffee grounds flying across my (unfortunately) white countertops, or sticking onto my grinder.

Here’s how and why it works: Essentially, most (good) coffee grinders have burrs, or gears, that grind against each other and the beans. When the beans come in contact with the burr, friction is produced and as a byproduct of ground coffee, so is static electricity. So the tiny little grounds essentially start flying everywhere.

Of course, water, an excellent conductor of electricity, will solve this problem, and in fact, among baristas, it’s called the Ross Droplet Technique. It’s so commonly used, that when I texted my barista friend after I realized this, he just responded, “Yup.”

But hey, that doesn’t change a thing. This $4 spray bottle has made my mornings go so much more smoothly. And who knows, it might just help you out, too.
