Watch Out: Filling a Water Cup With Soda Can Get You Arrested

Think twice before you cop a Coke.

More likely than not you've been a little bit of a rebel at least once in your life and have filled the complimentary cup you get for water at a fast-casual chain like Panera with iced tea, lemonade, or soda instead. Totally harmless, you think, though still a little risqué. For one man in Arkansas, however, this rebellious move lead to his arrest. Juice Beverage Filling Machines

It may be hard to believe, but ABC7 in Chicago reports that Cody Morris, 18, was charged with felony robbery after he filled his water cup with soda at McDonald's in Springdale, AR. According to the police report, Morris and his friends ordered three large tap waters at the drive-thru (at no cost), then reportedly dumped out the water and went inside to fill their cups with soda from the self-serve fountain. The restaurant's manager apparently took issue with this and decided to call the cops.

What's more, the manager told police that Morris refused to return the drink and tried to flee, hitting the manager with his car twice as he tried to escape. Morris was taken into custody but was later released on a $2,500 bond.

To us, this all just seems so petty. How much do three fountain drinks actually cost the franchisee? They're on the menu for $1.49 a piece, but what's the overhead cost? After all, it is just syrup mixed with tap water in a draft line.

What surprises us most, though, is that this isn't the first time someone has been charged with a felony for filling a courtesy cup with about a buck's worth of soda:
