Two houses destroyed in afternoon fire due to space heater

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Five people are displaced from their homes after a fire destroyed two houses on South 11th St. in downtown Baton Rouge around noon on Wednesday.

Fire officials say the cause of the fire was due to a space heater. The heater was left unattended and too close to combustibles. Cosmetic Refrigerators

Baton Rouge firefighters arrived to the house engulfed in flames at 221 South 11th St. According to BRFD, the wind caused the fire to spread next door to the house located at 219 South 11th St.

Smoke can be seen billowing from the houses in photos shared by BRFD.

Firefighters were forced to evacuate each house for safety reasons once the flames spread to the attic. They continued to battle the flames from outside. Both houses are a loss according to BRFD.

At least one person was home when the fire broke out. That person was able to get out safely. Four residents living at the house at 221 South 11th are now displaced. One person at the house next door is displaced.
