If your life revolves around all things yachting, take a look at the latest from Rolls-Royce. The iconic luxury car builder has launched its $28 million bespoke new Boat Tail model, and says it’s “inspired by classic J-Class cruisers of the early 20th century.”

The Boat Tail is built by Rolls’ custom Coachbuild division; Rolls itself is owned by BMW. It turns out that Rolls built a Boat Tail car in 1910, and decided to revive the model after some yacht-lovers wanted a modern version. Cabinet Grade Prefinished Plywood

The car is entirely built with aluminum body panels that are supposed to create the outline of racing yachts. It uses the same chassis and engine as a Rolls Phantom, but it also has 1,813 custom parts. It is the most expensive street-legal car in the world.

“This is a tale of two worlds,” says Alex Innes, the head of Coachbuild, “a modern motor car of contemporary design, made possible by historical techniques and time-honored craft. It is truly one of a kind.”

Rolls is making only three Boat Tails. One comes in a Rose Gold color to highlight the shades of oyster and soft rose; the owner’s family was in the oyster business, long ago. Rolls says the color “is a distinctive blend of oyster and soft rose, with large white and bronze mica flakes adding a unique iridescent quality that changes subtly under different light conditions.”

The trunk, or rear deck, has a butterfly-opening design using Royal Walnut veneer that will mature over time and become more like a cognac color. If you push the right button, the rear deck opens up to reveal a picnic area, complete with a silver dining set, a champagne chest, two fridges, a parasol and rotating cocktail tables with matching seats.

The Boat Tail uses a 563-hp, 6.75 liter V-12 engine with an eight-speed ZF gearbox, producing a top speed of about 155 mph, considerably faster than its J-Class antecedent.
