Tesla has officially announced a Wireless Charging Platform as the latest addition to its non-car online store offerings, now priced at no less than US$300. That may have been what prompted well-known tech YouTuber Zach Nelson to feature the accessory on the latest JerryRigEverything teardown video, to find out if the product is all branding hype, or if there is something to its Apple AirPower-beating claims.

They include the rated ability to charge any compatible smartphone or accessory at up to 15W regardless of where they are placed on its Alcantara-covered face-plate. Nelson ascertained that it does indeed pack a total of 30 shiny coils underneath, arranged and buffered with glue in such a way to distribute the power taken in from its 65W USB type-C power brick as evenly as possible. Besides bemoaning the lost opportunity to keep the impressive array of copper on show through a transparent design, Nelson noted that the accessory owes its functions to tech designed by FreePower. The "Tesla" Wireless Charging Platform still even bears the ODM's old Aira branding under its "Cybertruck-style" cover - as well as a main board under those fancy coils, with what some might think as a surprisingly small amount of thermal paste.

Then again, as Nelson mused, the impressive arrangement of coils might also be optimized for thermal management in itself. Those looking to spend a little less on a mat-style wireless charger could consider the Samsung alternative available on Amazon.
